Norilsk Nickel will pay the largest fine in Russian history
The service has already proposed to the subsidiary of Norilsk Nickel, at the CHP of which there was a leak, to voluntarily compensate for the damage. The company itself has already declared its readiness to pay all accrued fines.
The environmental damage from the largest diesel leak near Norilsk was estimated by Rosprirodnadzor at 147.7 billion rubles. Most likely, this is the largest such fine in Russian history.
According to the agency, the damage caused to water bodies amounts to 147 billion rubles, and to soils – 738 million rubles. The service reportedly sent claims for voluntary damages to the Norilsk-Taimyr energy company, which is part of the MMC.
The accident occurred on May 29 at TPP-3, which is owned by a subsidiary of Norilsk Nickel. One of the diesel fuel storage tanks at TPP-3 (owned by NTEK, a member of the Norilsk Nickel group) in Norilsk was damaged on May 29 due to a sharp subsidence of the foundation supports. A fuel spill occurred with a volume of about 21 thousand cubic meters.
Norilsk Nickel considers the main cause of the accident warming in permafrost conditions, which set in motion the supports under the fuel tanks. On the territory of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, a federal emergency mode was introduced. On Friday, the Ministry of Emergency Situations reported the localization of spilled fuel.
Nornickel shares on the news of such a large fine went down and lost about 3% on the Moscow Exchange at 18:20 Moscow time. The company itself estimated its costs to eliminate the consequences of the accident at 10 billion rubles. The fine issued by Rosprirodnadzor is one of the largest in Russian history. Formally large claims were filed with foreign shareholders of the Sakhalin-2 project in 2007, but in reality, they didn’t have to pay them after joining the Gazprom project.
At the end of 2019, Nornickel reported a nearly doubled net profit – up to $ 6 billion, and EBITDA – by 27%, up to $ 7.9 billion. In April 2020, the company reported that it mobilized existing credit lines and created a cash reserve of about $ 5 billion. Together with unused credit lines, the total size of the pillow liquidity exceeds $ 7 billion, which allows servicing and paying off debts for three years without attracting additional financing.
Head of the company Vladimir Potanin during meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Nornickel was ready to pay any fines imposed. At the same time, the major shareholders of MMC are ready to consider the issue of adjusting dividends in order to support the company. : ///
